WHAT’S UNDER MR. BMW DERBY’S HAT – WHYTE ON AKEED MOFEED!

Right now, the only thing certain when it comes to the Hong Kong BMW Derby is that Douglas Whyte will ride the Richard Gibson-trained Akeed Mofeed. Surprised? Not me.

I don’t really understand all the drama of naming the rider as I am sure it was a done deal after Whyte won on the horse on Saturday. Why would the owner, jock him off after the rider has won three times on Gold-Fun- and raced by the same connections? What is still unclear are the other riding engagements. For instance, is Ryan Moore actually coming to Hong Kong to ride Sean Woods’ Autumn Gold? I hear that Gerard Mosse has been booked to ride John Moore’s Poetic Justice.

So what will Zac Purton and Brett Prebble ride? The latter’s usual support system- Caspar Fownes- has gone elsewhere whereas rumors are rife that the Aussie jockey’s days in Hong Kong are numbered as he and his family are destined to return to Oz.

Will another Aussie jockey follow suit? The odds are high that he will- which would be a real pity.
