FOR THIS WEEK ONLY: A HAPPY THURSDAY WITH EXTRA HORSEPOWER

HAPPY THURSDAY 1

Sometimes change is good. Sometimes change is necessary. And with there having been racing on Monday, things have been put back a day. This means a Happy Thursday evening- but with everything associated with our Happy Wednesday nights, but with some extra horsepower.

As for Happy Thursday at Happy Valley, there will, of course, be the exciting horse racing plus ‘live’ music at the Beer Garden from Carnivale, and the Jennifer Palor Band at Adrenaline, all the competitions and other activities. Adding to it all, and on display, will be two of the world’s newest, fastest and sleekest cars- the McLaren 650S and 570S Coupé.

HAPPY THURSDAY 3

HAPPY THURSDAY 4

Only recently launched, both cars are limited editions, with the 650S being rated the quickest sports car in the world capable of accelerating from 0 to 200 km/hr. This is a sneak preview to when Hong Kong plays host in October for the opening leg of the global Formula E Championship held over two days at the Central Harbourfront. There’s even the chance for you to try and conquer a virtual racing circuit.

ANY MORE POEMS FOR KEI?

FOR KEI 1

We must thank the reader who sent in their Poem For Kei- female apprentice Kei Chiong, who has quickly built up a very loyal following, especially with female racing fans.

FOR KEI 2

Riding winners quite regularly these days, and having conquered riding the often very tricky city track, Kei is very much the pinup girl of Happy Wednesday racing.

FOR KEI 3

If you have a poem, or drawing, or photograph of Kei you’d like to share with everyone, send it to us at competition@fasttrack.hk. There will be prizes for the most interesting and creative entries.

FOR KEI 4

POEM FOR KEI

FOR KEI 5

She’s taken on the boys
And she gives as good as she gets
She’s no pushover
She’s not just
making up the numbers
Kei Chiong always rides to win

FOR KEI 6

She takes it all in
And she gets better every day
She’s no also-ran
She’s the pinup girl
with Hong Kong racing fans
Kei Chiong always rides to win

FOR KEI 7

Kei’s the face of Happy Wednesday
She’s always got that winning smile
She’s brought something new to racing
Which we haven’t had for quite a while

FOR KEI 8

There’s someone else to cheer on
Not just The Magic Man
Let’s hear it for our favourite girl
She has her own magic wand
When it comes to riding winners
Kei Chiong always does the best she can

“CONSERVATIVE” HONG KONG AUDIENCES WAKE UP TO DAN AND PHIL’S 7-SECOND CHALLENGE? AND AT A RACECOURSE? REALLY?

SECOND CHALLENGE 1

Ask concert promoters what Hong Kong audiences are alike, and the answer is always the same: Reserved. Conservative. Shy.

SECOND CHALLENGE 2

Even the Rolling Stones had to work extra hard for their money to get some form of response when the band performed here for what turned out to be the controversial HarbourFest concert during the city’s SARS crisis. When Sir Mick pranced around the stage and called out, “Hong Kong, I can’t hear you”, he was met with a few feeble, “Yeah, man, rock on” responses.

SECOND CHALLENGE 3

When the great David Bowie performed here, he told audiences, “Next is a new song, and I know you don’t know it, so don’t be polite and stand up. Save yourself for the hits like Rebel Rebel”.

SECOND CHALLENGE 4

And then there’s Dan And Phil’s 7-Second Challenge, an app created by two young Radio 1 request show personalities- Dan Howell and Phil Lester.

SECOND CHALLENGE 5

The app has made the duo a YouTube sensation- a goofy and irreverent game where people are asked to do all sorts of strange things in seven seconds. Act like a dog in love with a cat, act like a Martian eating a Big Mac for the first time etc. That kinda thing, but with the eclectic minds of Dan and Phil having their specific challenges.

SECOND CHALLENGE 6

The lads’ 7-Second Challenge made its debut at Happy Valley Racecourse a few months ago as part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s successful Happy Wednesday nights. And guess what?

SECOND CHALLENGE 7

SECOND CHALLENGE 8

SECOND CHALLENGE 9

Apart from probably being the first racing club to bring something created by YouTubers- and for YouTubers- Dan And Phil’s 7-Second Challenge shows that Hong Kong audiences are hardly reserved. In fact, they’re not only good sports, they’re pretty wacky, and add to the Happy Wednesday experience- that unique experience that can only be found at Happy Valley Racecourse.

Watch the videos below- and if and when in Hong Kong, join in and lose all inhibitions. It could even be cathartic and therapeutic- and great fun!
