MAGIC TONIGHT 1

With Joao Moreira copping a four meeting suspension after doing a Houdini to get out of the fox hole he found himself in on Able Friend on Sunday, and had hoped to start his time on the sidelines by forfeiting his rides tonight- that request was turned down- one has to wonder just how good a book he has.

Below, a lucky young girl at Flemington catches The Magic Man’s goggles after his win last weekend on Brazen Beau.

MAGIC TONIGHT 2

The Magic Man seems to save his best for Shatin whereas HK Derby winning jockey Zac Purton can always be assured to give it his all at both tracks while Happy Valley is where the local battlers get the opportunity to rack up a few winners and have a Happy Wednesday.

MAGIC TONIGHT 3

Tonight seems to be no exception with apprentice Dickie Lui, who’s been showing some improvement in recent weeks, looking to be the local boy to follow.

MAGIC TONIGHT 4

Sure, Moreira will, most likely, ride a winner or two as will Purton whereas Douglas Whyte looks like drawing a blank, but most of the races look very open, competitive affairs where tips and form can be thrown out the window.

Follow the jockey-trainer partnerships and, in particular, go local.

MAGIC TONIGHT 5

RACE 1

Notorious photo bomber and the man who wears a skunk on his head- Nat Chan- has his horse- Kharu- running here with his SoHo brothers in arms- jockey Ben So and trainer Peter Ho- in control.

MAGIC TONIGHT 6

Though surprised that Derek Leung who won on Kharu two starts ago at the city track and in Race 1, is not on it, the SoHo Chan combination, below, is a lethal one in a weak race like this.

MAGIC TONIGHT 7

So- and SoHo- perhaps use Brett Prebble’s mount New Pet, which had miserable luck in the running last time out, as a banker, and don’t leave out The Chan Man’s Kharu, where a big Quartet payout could be on the cards.

SELECTIONS: (8)-3-4-6-7-11

RACE 2

A Class 4 raffle for Class 4 horses rated 40 to 60 and where seven of the twelve riders are local. Moreira on Sea Ruby should be in the Quartet, but don’t be surprised if Derek Leung, Dickie Lui, Alex Lai and Vincent CY Ho are to the fore and in the money. Think global, act local.

MAGIC TONIGHT 9

QUARTET SELECTIONS: (1)-4-5-8-9-12

RACE 3

Again, Dickie Lui has a good ride on Spitfire with last winner Joyeux being the one to beat for The Zac Attack-Caspar Fownes team.

RACE 4

Vincent CY Ho riding for Tony Cruz on a horse that’s just been switched to the Putha Man’s stable???

MAGIC TONIGHT 12

This is probably the first time good guy “Cruzy” has used Ho, possibly due to the suspension of Matty Chadwick, and Beauty Flame is one to keep safe. Ho is again used by the trainer in Race 6 when he partners Lucky Omens when, one would have thought he might have used his claiming apprentice Alvin Ng.

MAGIC TONIGHT 13

Triumphant Dragon with Zac Purton aboard, below, looks the one to beat with, perhaps, some competition offered from One Of A Kind, owned by Legislative Councillor Dr Rita Fan, which is to be ridden by Dickie Lui, who, as mentioned above, has some reasonably strong winning chances tonight.

MAGIC TONIGHT 14

Navel Orange is in this race, and with Moreira aboard, it will start the favourite. But, gawd knows how long many have waited for this horse to salute and it’s only been consistent in its string of disappointing runs despite numerous tips that it was a “certainty”. It might win- but it can without my money. I’d rather be gazing at my own navel.

QUARTET SELECTIONS: (1-8)-3-4-5-6-11-12

RACE 5

The John Moore-trained Griffendor has been racing up a class for a number of its recent runs with Derek Leung aboard, and now returns to Class 4 with the Magic Man aboard.

MAGIC TONIGHT 16

To say Griffendor will start short is an understatement. Can it win? Yes as all those runs up a class has brought it down to an all-time low rating of 59. Will it be worth backing? Not if it starts at anything less than 3 to 1. I’d rather be taking Tom’s Charm over it even if the galloper is a Moreira “discard” with Sum Win Dragon to finish in the Quartet. It will be some win if it actually does.

MAGIC TONIGHT 17

QUARTET SELECTIONS: (1-3)-2-6-8-9

RACE 6

Savvy Nature and Twin Delight both had Derby aspirations and here they are competing in a Class 2 race at Happy Valley with Moreira on the former and Purton on the latter.

MAGIC TONIGHT 18

Logically, with their recent Derby aspirations, they should be double bankers, but, then again, poor Autumn Gold once also held dreams of winning the Derby. And, apart from the phenomenal training effort of John Size, below, to get Luger to win the Group 1 $18m race, keep following this along with Helen Happy Star. The latter is a future star waiting to happen.

MAGIC TONIGHT 19

The Pan Sutong pair of The Obliterator, ridden maniacally by Christophe Soumillon who had earlier ridden the same owner’s Gold-Fun off the pace (?), and Giant Treasure, which we know all about from the UK, look like being shooting stars.

MAGIC TONIGHT 20

QUARTET SELECTIONS: (4-8)-2-3-5-6-12

RACE 7

Zac Purton riding Strong Foundation two pounds over for Caspar Fownes catches the eye whereas Radiant Bunny must go close and include Kerkeni to place at odds. In fact, keep following this David Hall runner. A win is around the corner. I can feel it in my fingers, toes and old fella.

MAGIC TONIGHT 21

QUARTET SELECTIONS: (6-7)-1-2-10-11-12

RACE 8

Go local as this race could be another laisee packet for the local battlers.

MAGIC TONIGHT 22

Meanwhile, what about that huge plunge on The Sylph on Sunday? This horse with “Darth” Ferraris had shown nothing and was discarded by every tipster, but which started at- diiiiiuuuu-6 to 1, and came oh-so-close to winning- but with the odds being ridiculously unders.
