For a nanu second some were tolling the bells for Ho Lee Fook, the NOT Chinese restaurant down in Lower Elgin Street.

This was after a food blogger received way too much publicity for tearing everything about the restaurant except for the Pork Belly to shreds.

After a break of almost six weeks, a group of us revisited the restaurant- and while, other than NOM located above it, the rest of the street was like Le Rue Morgue- Ho Lee Fook was packed- and packed with a clientele not usually seen in Lower Elgin Street- an upwardly mobile crowd and happy to be in a restaurant that’s welcoming and comfortable upon entering and with a selection of dishes that are excellent.

I had forgotten how damn delicious the Shredded Chicken Salad was- spicy with a great kick- and filling.

Quite frankly, we could have just had this dish and the great tasting dumplings.

Still five dishes and a bottle of wine for around $1,200?

Far less pricy than very many very average dishes served in many other restaurants without any of the people who frequent Ho Lee Fook.

As I have always said, people make a city and people make a restaurant for the simple reason that people gravitate towards any venue that attracts interesting people.

Jeez, I’m starting to sound like that Barbra Streisand song about how “people needing people are the luckiest people in the world.”
