FREELOADERS 1

So, help me here: People whom you haven’t heard from in decades suddenly appear with some idea- usually hair-brained- and want to get your advice- for free- and into your roller deck. For free.

FREELOADERS 2

What do you get outta it?

A bill for an empty dinner. And when that idea doesn’t hit the right note with names given out in vain, they’re back again to the same old well for more handouts and bailouts.

FREELOADERS 3

Have these users no shame? No, as like crack addicts, they’ve been users and abusers with enablers for so long, it’s almost taken as a given that someone will come along to bail them out as it’s easy enough to find some ung sang, A Man Needs A Maid- and these are weak, needy people who’ll never change despite all the pretenses and promises.

On a far lower level of importance in the totem pole- or are they?- are musicians and others supposedly in the creative field who are given a buffet spread of opportunities at a time when these are far and few between and believe they can scam their way through with the plastic fantastic by bringing nothing to the table.

Some can’t even find the table if they were to bang into it.

FREELOADERS 4

So, why bother? Cos in any business no one can be an island and the search for that right team- that right partnership like a successful marriage- becomes a life-long search and journey.

Lik eets the good, the bad, the ugly, the talented, the mediocre, the strays, the baggage, and realize just how magical the Beatles were to come together and create and produce.

FREELOADERS 6

There’s then the black and white relationship between Keith Richard and Mick Jagger, how and why Martin Scorcese has worked so well with Leonardo DeCaprio and, before him, DeNiro and Harvey Keitel, the magic of Gable and Lombard, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Bogart and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn etc.

Location, location, location is of paramount importance to restaurateurs and team work, team work, team work is what drives the creative person.

FREELOADERS 10

The problem here is the disappoi bites you on your arse and, like those freeloaders mentioned earlier, one realizes that many become unnecessary baggage who slow you down as the light is finally shone on them and there’s the realization that they have nothing there you need.

FREELOADERS 11

I have a friend who lives with his life-long mantra being, If they have nothing to give you, they’re useless so just lose them before wasting more money on them.

This seemed way too harsh for the supposedly-balanced Libran in me.

But, these days and understanding how good friend Douglas Whyte, Hong Kong’s champion jockey for thirteen consecutive years and has won almost $120m in Stake money this season, “works it” before deciding who to trust, who can come in handy and who needs to be dropped from his Christmas list, life has suddenly become interesting again.

It’s that moment when life’s almost a weird kinda “games of thrones” where it takes time to figure out who’s who and who matters and who needs you, but how you no longer need them- even one-time family- or have outgrown them and need to “kill them off” to make the rest of the script interesting.

They are knee-jerk one-offs and simply put, not good enough as they have no idea what good is.

FREELOADERS 14

Sounds harsh, but always rememb riage, divorce and the whole damn thing, nice guys- and people- end up last.
