THE DARK SIDE OF HONG KONG NIGHT LIFE 1

Get in an all-girl band and it’s a club’s recipe for success- especially if it’s a late night club located in the throbbing, heaving Wanchai area of Hong Kong.

This is exactly what HK Cafe has done- the club was the former Neptune 2- and with comical results while watching from the side.

Called AG’s Platinum, the all-female band is as original as its name and do around four sets of covers- Katy Perry, Bruno Mars etc- performed with equal parts youthful exuberance and enthusiastic musicianship.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 1

Is the band as good as the Philippines all-girl band General Luna?

Not even close.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 2

The now-disbanded General Luna- extremely attractive- could get up there and really play- especially, drummer Bea whereas Platinum play around onstage like some frat band and seem to be happy being up there onstage- performing and striking poses.

For me, the real show is when Platinum stop playing and sit behind an exclusive velvet rope like bona fide Rock goddesses- but without any table manners as they slurp up a late night meal in not exactly very feminine ways and probably also belch and fart.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 3

Nothing really wrong with any of this as it’s obvious the band has been thrown together, made to rehearse for the sole purpose of this gig, and provide the club with some Filipina cheesecake adobo- which is working.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 4

Those there- older expats, of course- try to get past that velvet rope- there’s even “security” present to keep these wascally horny wabbits at bay- to chat up the girls- soooooo many can help them get recording deals or perform in the US, the UK or Europe- with some of the most lame chat-up lines.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 5

This is the floor show where very old men become lame groupies and applaud some rough cover versions like trained seals while other Filipinas hover around in packs and waiting to pick up the crumbs.

NO PLATINUM SUCCESS 6

It’s all quite sad in a funny way which, at least, never reaches the desperateness of all those desperadoes lost, dazed and confused at the nearby Amazonian.
