How to make the most out of your day at the beach 0

It seems like summer’s back in Hong Kong, with continuing days of crispy and sunny weather, and all the hot people who have been hiding out last few weeks from pouring rain started coming out to the parks, islands, beaches, basically any outdoor venues where they could enjoy the sun. I also spent my weekend at a park by the pier and one of Hong Kong’s proud beaches for a nice summer tan, while enjoying a little freedom of people-watching given to me via my sunglasses.

All the major and popular beaches in Hong Kong are so close to the city; 30-40 minutes bus ride from Central will take you to deep water bay, Stanley, and Repulse Bay. Just grab your swimsuit, shorts, or tiny little bikini, tanning lotion, and a beach towel, and hop onto a bus. You can have a mini-vacation whenever you feel like without flying all the way to Thailand.

What now, a little shopping wouldn’t hurt, right? After lying down under the sun for a bit before you get completely roasted, you could head off to handmade market, antique shops, and souvenir stores and more to find something pretty for yourself or for your friends and family. Many people have commented on those markets that they are just like the ones in Mong Kok, but it’s because they haven’t fully explored the streets. Trust me, there ARE quite a lot of hidden gems.

Feeling hungry now? It’s time for a feast! You’ve sweated enough for a day at the beach and while walking around the streets, and let’s count that as a work out. Let’s all justify and comfort ourselves by saying that once we read an article somewhere that tanning kind of burns fat. A huge square by Stanley Bay is filled with pubs, cafes, restaurants, and corner shops where they sell enough food to feed the whole village and you don’t want to miss them out. Find whatever you feel like, fish and chips with a pint of beer? pesto pasta? wagyu burger? grilled seafood? They might be a little pricy but do not complain; you are out of work or school, out of bustling city for god’s sake, and about to have a decent quality meal at a beautiful place. You deserve it.

Now just sit by the beach – whether it’s a rooftop cafe, or one of the pubs on the street – and grab a drink, and simply watch the sunset. Take a picture and instagram it. #sunset #chillingonthebeach #carpediem #beer #hongkonglife

Spot a lady who’s drinking on her own by the window, doing the exact same thing that you were doing. Say hello, casually start a conversation by talking about weather, buy her a drink or two, and grab a bus or cab together back to town. The rest is up to you.
