Many of us have had a soft spot for the Grand Hyatt with great memories of nights at JJ’s and the Champagne Bar, events held at the Grand Ballroom and meeting people more weird than the cast in a Fellini movie.

Though memories live with us, it’s very sad when one sees your favorite hotel deteriorate into a three or even two-star bungle in the jungle.

Today, the Grand Hyatt is a fucking embarrassment with the best outlets being its Coffee Shop and 1 Harbour Road.

The Grand Ballroom is still under the renovation which means finding a convenient loo seem like a trek to Timbuktu.

Plans to renovate the Champagne Bar have been shelved. Again. These plans have been on hold for eight years.

The new management are nothing like the old management.

Whereas the latter were open and became real friends with their guests, the new crew appear distant and second rate whereas listening to the staff whine and whinge about where they’re working and talk openly about resignation plans doesn’t help.

When there on Tuesday and leaving the emptiness of the Champagne Bar, my friends and I froze as we were engulfed in the lobby by a tour group from Mainland China.

It was all very noisy, cheap and resembled the motley mob one has to fight past at the Lowu border. All that were missing were some chickens and pigs.

Wait: Perhaps they were they were but hidden amongst the human animals making snorting and cackling sounds and taking all the grandness of what is fast-becoming a pale shadow of a hotel that was once Grand.
